A lawyer by profession, YABhg. Tun Michael Chen was admitted to the Bar in 1962 after studying law at Lincoln’s Inn, London. He also studied Philosophy and Education at New Asia College, now part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
A key political figure since 1964, he served as MCA Deputy President, Member of Parliament (1964–1986), Senator (1997–2003), and Senate President (2000–2003). He held key ministerial roles, including Minister of Housing and Local Government (1974–1979) and Chairman of Port Klang Authority (1984–1990), helping transform it into a global port.
A strong advocate for unity, he shaped Malaysia-China relations under Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and contributed to forming Barisan Nasional. Tun Abdul Razak hailed him as a “Political Mentor” and a champion of justice. For his contributions, he received Malaysia’s highest honor, the Seri Setia Mahkota (S.S.M.), with the title “Tun,” in 2017.
